             Nirman 2011

This year will see three Symposiums concurrent to NIRMAN Exhibition. These three Symposiums will debate on varied topics like Sustainable Heritage, Design in architecture and the third day will have a Design Lab.

The details of the three Symposiums are as follows –

Day I
Theme : Sustainable Heritage
Date : 23.09.2011
Time : 14:00 to 16:30 hrs

The slogan – ‘Unity in Diversity’ becomes most appropriate when one talks about its heritage, culture, traditions, craftsmanship, arts, food and ecology. With 5000 years of history, India has its own set of issues ad options for conservation of its rich heritage. But at times, it is even more difficult to sustain the conservation initiatives, because of rapid urbanisation and fast-paced lifestyles. It is here, Sustainable Heritage becomes a key issue because after all, it is the tale of each living city ! With this thought as a backdrop, some of the internationally acclaimed designers will be making presentations on how to conserve our heritage and also, how to sustain it.

Day II
Theme : Design in Architectural and Interior Projects
Date : 24.09.2011
Time : 16:00 to 18:30 hrs

This Design Xymposium is going to be organized in collaboration with Designindia POOL. As the practice of architecture and interior is becoming more and more complex and vast, more and more designers from other fields are getting attached to this. We are all aware of the role of marketing communication designers in helping to market schemes or adding brand and positioning to commercial projects. There are more designers who are quickly becoming indispensable part of this team that brings you a complete experience. The designers will offer presentations and insights into designing for architecture and interiors in this spectacular cross-disciplinary design event.

Day III
Theme : People Centric Design
Date : 25.09.2011
Design Lab : 10:00 to 14:00 hrs (by invitation only)
Public Lecture : 15:00 to 16:00 hrs

The design lab is conceived as a hands-on design workshop for government officials, developers, practicing architects and planners. The lab is a part of 'Our Cities Ourselves’, a Global Collaborative Programme of Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) to promote a vision of our cities that is more livable, equitable and sustainable.

By means of a visioning exercise, the lab will encourage discussions on the issues affecting our city, strategies to overcome these issues and implementation tools to ensure the realization of the vision of our city. It is jointly organized by ITDP, GICEA and Environmental Planning Collaborative.

The design lab will be moderated by Jeff Risom, associate at Gehl Architects- a Copenhagen based reputed consulting firm offering expertise in the fields of urban design, city planning and architecture. Jeff is an active teacher and lecturer, speaking at conferences in New York, Mexico City and Amman, and as a guest lecturer at U. Penn and London School of Economics. Jeff teaches a course on ‘Livability in the Modern City’ at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad in Copenhagen.
